Grimskull - Grimskull
Recorded: 2009

The band was formed in mid-2009, and it didn't take long until they hit the studio and recorded their first studio album. Songs like Black Death and The Evil Force Of Darkness were written in 1990, when the Solheim brothers first started out playing metal. Others, like Dream Master, I'm Watching You Watching Me and Live For Today, Die For Tomorrow were written in the mid-90's, for their Juicy Jane album, that was never completed. And the rest was written weeks before the recording started.

Grimskull about the Grimskull album:

I'm Watching You Watching Me
This song was written around 1998, by Jan Terje Eidset, the singer in one of our previous bands, Juicy Jane. It was slightly different until it was sped up and metalized, and later we added the progressive part and the solo. The lyrics were written in Gothenburg, a couple of days after we decided to form the band. We wanted to finish our first album in a fast and rough way, like things were done in the old days, so we decided to dig up old songs we had and finish them.

We wanted to start off the album with a fast song, in the vein of typical 80's metal albums. So this was a natrual choice. The song is about a stalker stalking his/her stalker, and the question remains: Who is more psycho?

Iron Eyes
Written in august 2009, after we had started recording the Grimskull album. We wanted a song that really captured our idea of combining thrash-metal riff with a pop-chorus.

The song is inspired by old school sci-fi movies from the 50's and 70's. A futuristic vision about two enormous iron eyes, kind of like a couple of death stars, controlling the world. Watching your every move, and shooting you with laser beams if you do not behave.

Live For Today, Die For Tomorrow
This song was written in 1997, Trygve had the main riff and Geir came up with the chorus. The rest was put together by jamming and keeping whatever sounded good and right.

Although one of the heaviest and most brutal songs on the album, it's still the most positive. It's about living your life to the fullest, 'cause you've only got one life and you don't know if you get another chance.

Dream Master
Dream Master was written in 1993, and has been played by almost every band we've been in since. It's like our "smoke on the water", if you like, with a very simple riff and a catchy chorus.

Most of the lyrics were written by Geir and Trygve's cousin, Per Audun Bareksten, and was heavily inspired by Nightmare On Elm Street. The music was written by Geir and Asle Rasmus Seljeseth (Juicy Jane), and Trygve made the finishing touches for the Grimskull album.

Black Death
Black Death was written in 1991, and we thought it was *really* heavy at the time. It was almost like a metal-parody, with growling vocals and evil-as-can-be lyrics. The riffs and chorus got kind of stuck in our heads, so we dug it up for a demo we did in 1997, made it more melodic, added a couple of more riffs and it hasn't changed much since.

The lyrics are inspired by the black death, one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

Fallgate To Hell
We have always had a love for instrumental metal songs, like MSG's Into The Arena and Maiden's Genghis Kahn, so we decided to do one of our own. Most of the song was written in 2006, but was finished for the Grimskull album in 2009. It basically became an instrumental song because we had no clue what to sing on the verse.

The song's title is inspired by the ferry between Folkestad and Volda, Norway, which has one of the coolest sounding fallgates we have ever heard. It really sounds like you're entering hell.

Grimskull
The last song written for the Grimskull album, a couple of days after Iron Eyes. We wanted another thrashy metal meets pop kind of songs, and we knew we *had* to have a bandname song, like all classic metal band has, so the title came naturally.

Grimskull is a clairvoyant king who knows his people are gonna die in a bloody war. He knows he cannot win, and there is nothing he can do to change the future, but he still knows he has to fight for his kingdom.

The Evil Force Of Darkness
The main riff was written in 1991, also as a thrash-metal parody. But we soon realized the riff was so cool we had to make a real song of it. We have never been afraid of doing easy and simple riffs, because some of the best and most classic songs and compositions have been very easy, and have also been easier for non-musicians to remember and connect with. We dug it up for our 1997 demo, and finished most of it.

We were very inspired by Manowar when we did the 1997 demo, and were angry about the destruction of the metal scene, so we gave it the title Prophets Of Metal. And it was basically about how metal and metal fans would never go away. But we later decided that "fighting for metal" was Manowar's thing. We later changed it to "The Evil Force Of Darkess", because it suited Grimskull's "over the top evilness"-style. The lyrics are somewhat connected to the Grimskull song. While the Grimskull song is about the king, this is about his warriors.
